Delilah Block of the Month – Month 1 – Rising Sun Block

Delilah BOM Tips - Apr. 10, 2018 - Jessica OklaRoots

Anyone else listen to "Delilah" on the radio?  You know the intro.... "Deliiiiilaaaaaaaahhh"? Well, I sing that EVERY TIME I am working on one of these blocks... and I kind of love it. (So does my husband, he just doesn't want to admit it)

If you don't know, the Delilah star of this blog post is a recent quilt pattern by Jen Kingwell.  I have been holding on to this block of the month pattern since it started... a year ago.  I participated with Amitie quilt shop, receiving a block pattern, acrylic templates and a selection of fabrics each month.  At this point in time (April 2018) the block of the month program is over and the pattern is not available to purchase.  I will update this once that changes. UPDATE: Pattern available here!

Fat Quarter Cinch Pouch Tutorial

Bags, Tutorials - Jan. 05, 2018 - Jessica OklaRoots

In an effort to get through the last minute Christmas gift hustle, I realized I didn’t have gift bags on hand for the smaller trinkets.  Instead of braving the elements (and putting on “grown up” clothes) I relied on my handy-dandy sewing room for a solution.

Here is a handy calculator to cut the calculation time for binding down SIGNIFICANTLY!!

Simply enter in your quilt and fabric measurements, click "Calculate" and the calculator will tell you how long your binding should be, as well as how many strips you need to cut and how many yards that will require.

I know.... my mind is blown as well.

The next bag I have been testing out is the Boxy Bag. This is a very popular bag pattern, especially for us beginners. After reviewing a few tutorials, I decided to follow Kelby at kelbysews. She has done such a wonderful job of showing you every single step of the process in her tutorial.

Trying out the Noodlehead Petal Pouch

Bags, Tutorials - Jun. 20, 2017 - Jessica OklaRoots

I have avoided making bags for years.  Yes, I only started quilting 1 year ago, but I have dabbled in sewing for the last 6. While I have been interested in making all kinds of things, a zippered bag seemed too daunting for this newby sewer.

“Faux-Flake” Quilt Preview

Quilts - Feb. 23, 2017 - Jessica OklaRoots

Here is a sneak peak at a pattern I am working on.  This is a beginner pattern, specifically a winter pattern. The pieced quilt top is made up entirely of half square triangles, which were made using Triangles On A Roll Half Square, 2″. For the backing and binding, I used a large cut of  Shannon Minky Soft Rabbit Cuddle Creme.

A printable, easy to understand pattern is still in the works.  Here is a sneak peak of the design!

This was hand quilted, using a small stitch on the minky side and a long stitch on the quilt top.  This allowed the top of the quilt to look heavily quilted, but no quilting lines show up on the back (minky) side.

How To Vectorize a Watercolor Image using Affinity Designer (Mac)

Tutorials - Nov. 18, 2016 - Jessica OklaRoots

Adobe Illustrator appears to be the standard in almost any creative industry.  I have not used it.  If you work for a company that is footing the monthly bill for Ai, high five, that is awesome.  But for me, that is going to cost another 25-50 dollars a month.  And while that doesn’t sound like a terribly large amount of money, I don’t need another monthly expense.

An alternative (especially for those of us who don’t have a need for every Ai feature) is Affinity Designer. …

Did you catch my big mistake in today’s tutorial? Did you catch my big mistake in today’s tutorial? 🤦‍♀️ I still can’t believe I did that, so embarrassing! But it happens to all of us at some point.

This month’s @bagmakingbeesclub Bee box is GORGEOUS! The calming bonded nylon and easy to work with waterproof canvas was the perfect combo for a relaxing make. And the Mountain Saddle Bag pattern from @emmalinebags is, of course, absolutely perfect.

This pattern comes in two sizes and I’m featuring the Mini size. It’s a perfect every day bag and can be mixed and matched in so many ways. Make sure to check the tutorial for tips on piecing the gusset and adaptions for a removable strap 👍

Happy Monday everyone!

It’s happening… I’m entering my QUILTING ERA PART It’s happening… I’m entering my QUILTING ERA PART 2! Or maybe it’s part 3….

But we’re getting back to quilting, baby! Woo!

This has been a topic of conversation in my DMs for over a year now, and I miss quilting with you all so much. We’re tip toeing back into it, so I’m trying some new-to-me techniques before we dive into the next quilt along.

I’ve tried Foundation Paper Piecing a couple times, and completely failed at it. I don’t know why I just couldn’t wrap my head around this method. I’m still by no means an expert, but I made this adorable Hopeful Rabbit quilt block from Snuggle Puzzle Quilt Co and it actually turned out! This is so exciting!

Follow along in this week’s YouTube tutorial to see how it came together. And yes… I’m totally hooked. There will be more FPP to come!

There’s something about the end of winter that rea There’s something about the end of winter that really messes with my feelings. As I look toward spring I get this intense wave of inspiration and excitement, but also feel overwhelmed and lacking. I see artists and business owners showcasing their vibrant new projects. There’s so much color and soothing pastels and brilliant ideas, and I LOVE it but also feel like maybe I’m not keeping up. I fill this notebook with ideas for projects, but then get irritated that there’s no time to get them to fruition.

And the thing is, I AM doing a lot. I know I am. I’m working tirelessly on my own projects that won’t be seen for weeks, months, or even a year. And I know when these projects can be shared, it will THEN look like I’m doing so much.

So if you’re feeling similar, just know you’re not alone. Sometimes the work takes awhile to pay off. Sometimes the work is never seen, but still necessary. We all feel like maybe we should be doing a little more, from time to time. Be proud of what you’ve already accomplished. It’s significant.
The cutest tote bag pattern has been UPDATED! You The cutest tote bag pattern has been UPDATED! You know how much I love to write a solid, basic foundation bag pattern. And then continuously make updates to it, sometimes so many it evolves into a whole new design 😂 (lookin at you, Picnic Pouch).

But my quirks are your gain! Because when I update and modify a design, all previous purchases of that pattern get the update for free 😱

This update to the Totes Cute Tote pattern includes instructions for modifying the handles and adding a lining. It’s a more professional look to a very simple bag.

And I have ooooooone more idea for those handles 🤔 Stay tuned!
