Delilah Block of the Month – Month 3 – Shooting Star

Delilah BOM Tips - Jul. 12, 2018 - Jessica OklaRoots

"NO CURVES!!"

Did you hear someone screaming that from their rooftop? You did?! Wasn't me....

This is the first month of the BOM that is all straight lines, no curvy curves. And I really enjoyed it!  Kind of wished I was required to make more than just 2 of these.

But wait!  I've said this often. You can take any of Jen's blocks and just make a whole quilt out of it.  This is the block (I say that about every block, even the curvy ones) that I will make an entire quilt of.

I don't have a whole lot to say about these blocks. They are simple, they are beautiful, they are super scrappy friendly.

Each month I make sure to raid only my scrap jars.  These are pieces of fabric ranging in size from 2.5"x2.5" to fat eighths. As with all Jen patterns, you have no need to buy a lot of fabric of even use a sewing machine. That's right, they are written for you to simply use what you have.  The legend herself usually (maybe exclusively) uses a needle and thread, no middle man machine.

So here are my Shooting Stars. I raided my rainbow jar for one block, and my yellow jar for the other.

The pattern is self explanatory, and you don't have to worry about which side of the fabric you trace your templates on.

Of course if there is a mistake to be made, your girl Jess is here to make it.  Pay attention during assembly.  These triangles can appear to be lined up correctly, when they aren't. So unless you are making tiny moths (adorable, right?), pay attention. Or be like me, and keep a seam ripper tucked in your pony tail at all times.

(Do I get strange looks at the grocery store like this? Uh.. yes, all the time. But there are other reasons for that as well.)

Have you tried Foundation Paper Piecing? How do yo Have you tried Foundation Paper Piecing? How do you feel about it?

I know I’m quilt cotton averse when it comes to accessories, but I’m slowly coming around. I especially like using this material when we can piece it!

For anyone interested in this unique technique, I just released a super simple and quick pattern walking you step-by-step in the process to make a curved flying geese. And of course I included a free video, available on the OklaRoots YouTube channel 🤗

Have a great weekend! Make it a relaxing one ❤️

This week’s tutorial has me feeling SO out of the This week’s tutorial has me feeling SO out of the bag loop 🫣

Apparently there is a whole lot of love for pouches with a large double zip opening… and this is the first time I’ve seen one!

The Aneira from @the.styled.magnolia is a BEAUTIFUL pattern that comes together in the coolest way. I promise you haven’t constructed a bag this way before, it’s SO smart. This is a great quick-ish sew, doesn’t have a lot of bells and whistles. But you’re definitely going to learn something new about curved gussets 🤗.

I hope you enjoy it! Have a great week friends ❤️

This week’s tutorial is going over the oh-so-adora This week’s tutorial is going over the oh-so-adorable Aurora Sling from @the.styled.magnolia !

This little cutie is a FUN bag to make! Super unique and handy gusset method, scrappy, and quick. This is a great make for those spring break and summer trips!

Quick question: for your every day bag, do you prefer to make it with vinyl (faux leather), nylon, or quilt cotton?? Let me know!

Ok friends, be kind while I figure out this voice Ok friends, be kind while I figure out this voice over and text technique ❤️.

Here is a quick tutorial on how to use the Hidden D-Ring template available in @shopoklaroots . This is a great technique to add a D-Ring to a bag where you don’t have a seam or an easier option.

For example, the Wish Tote has the strap anchor webbing stitched across the front and back panels. But if you want to modify the exterior with a large zipper or you have a featured design you don’t want covered, the Hidden D-Ring is a great option!

Let me know if you have any questions!

Did you catch my big mistake in today’s tutorial? Did you catch my big mistake in today’s tutorial? 🤦‍♀️ I still can’t believe I did that, so embarrassing! But it happens to all of us at some point.

This month’s @bagmakingbeesclub Bee box is GORGEOUS! The calming bonded nylon and easy to work with waterproof canvas was the perfect combo for a relaxing make. And the Mountain Saddle Bag pattern from @emmalinebags is, of course, absolutely perfect.

This pattern comes in two sizes and I’m featuring the Mini size. It’s a perfect every day bag and can be mixed and matched in so many ways. Make sure to check the tutorial for tips on piecing the gusset and adaptions for a removable strap 👍

Happy Monday everyone!

It’s happening… I’m entering my QUILTING ERA PART It’s happening… I’m entering my QUILTING ERA PART 2! Or maybe it’s part 3….

But we’re getting back to quilting, baby! Woo!

This has been a topic of conversation in my DMs for over a year now, and I miss quilting with you all so much. We’re tip toeing back into it, so I’m trying some new-to-me techniques before we dive into the next quilt along.

I’ve tried Foundation Paper Piecing a couple times, and completely failed at it. I don’t know why I just couldn’t wrap my head around this method. I’m still by no means an expert, but I made this adorable Hopeful Rabbit quilt block from Snuggle Puzzle Quilt Co and it actually turned out! This is so exciting!

Follow along in this week’s YouTube tutorial to see how it came together. And yes… I’m totally hooked. There will be more FPP to come!
